UnB's Service Bus gains monitoring: a dissertation instruments the university's digital backbone
Felipe Evangelista dos Santos defended at UnB’s PPCA a dissertation integrating monitoring tools into UnB’s Service Bus — critical infrastructure for communication between academic systems.

Public universities run on layers of legacy, new, and hybrid systems that must talk to each other. At UnB, that dialogue passes through the Service Bus — an ESB connecting the main academic and administrative systems. The dissertation defended in February 2020 by Felipe Evangelista dos Santos at UnB’s PPCA places that infrastructure under methodical observation — under the advising of Prof. Dr. Sergio Antônio Andrade de Freitas .
The work does not question the ESB as an architectural choice; it takes it as given and solves a classic SOA operational problem: without proper monitoring, the ESB turns into a black box whose failure surfaces only once the end service breaks. The author implements the integration between the Service Bus and monitoring tools capable of exposing latency, error rates, and message traceability in production. It is an investment that changes the cost of running: incidents are no longer detected by complaint but by alert.
By articulating software architecture with digital transformation of public administration, the work contributes to a still-current discussion: how to sustain governance of critical systems without depending on individual heroism.
The defense took place on February 11, 2020 in Brasília. The examining committee was chaired by the advisor, Prof. Dr. Sérgio Antônio Andrade de Freitas (CIC/UnB), and composed of Prof. Dr. Edna Dias Canedo (CIC/UnB) and Prof. Dr. Gibeon Soares De Aquino Junior (DIM/UFRN). Prof. Dr. Aletéia Patrícia Favacho de Araújo, PPCA program coordinator, also attended the session.
