Distance learning in Software Engineering: a thesis listens to students and measures their real perception

Júlia Farias Sousa defended at FCTE/UnB an undergraduate thesis analyzing student perceptions on the use of distance learning in the FCTE/UnB Software Engineering course.

Brasília, December 15, 2023

When the pandemic forced universities to run distance learning full-time, pedagogical decisions were made under emergency. Years later, the questions remain: what worked? How do the students themselves rate the experience? This qualified hindsight is what the undergraduate thesis defended in December 2023 by Júlia Farias Sousa puts into work, advised by Prof. George Marsicano Corrêa .

The work takes the FCTE/UnB Software Engineering course as a specific slice and listens to students with method — not as opinion polling, but as systematic investigation. The material collected reveals nuance: where distance learning expanded possibilities, where it shrank connection, what remained as technical legacy, and what has yet to be processed as institutional learning.

The work contributes to active learning and to the contemporary discussion of hybrid methodologies — increasingly present in institutions that must respond to varied demands from increasingly diverse student profiles.
