FormsGeo: a thesis adds geolocation to social surveys and returns context to respondents

Every social survey carries an implicit question about territory — but that dimension rarely makes it into the form without losing quality. The undergraduate thesis defended in February 2023 by Marcelo Victor de Sousa Silva and Washington Bispo Arishita Júnior proposes a practical solution to that: FormsGeo, an app developed under the advising of Prof. Fabiana Freitas Mendes .
The core idea is to integrate geolocation directly into the survey, allowing answers to be associated with coordinates with respondents’ consent. Subsequent reading gains layers: where the patterns are, which areas concentrate a given response, how the map changes over time. It is requirements engineering applied to a domain in which territorial granularity was usually sacrificed for the sake of collection simplicity.
Under a digital transformation lens, the work helps enable lower-cost surveys in community and academic settings — reducing dependence on proprietary platforms that absorb both the data and its interpretation.
