Police intelligence reports under the gamification lens: a dissertation measures what changes

Públio Pastrolin Cavalcante defended at UnB’s PPCA a dissertation evaluating how gamification applied to police intelligence activities affects the quality of reports produced.

Police intelligence produces documents under time pressure, hierarchy, and operational demand. Introducing gamification into such an environment is, at the very least, counterintuitive — and that is precisely why it matters. The dissertation defended in March 2023 by Públio Pastrolin Cavalcante at UnB’s PPCA takes that challenge as an empirical problem, under the advising of Prof. Dr. Sergio Antônio Andrade de Freitas .

The work does not ask whether gamification “works” in police intelligence activities: it asks what changes when it is applied. Focus: the quality of reports produced. Method: comparison between groups with and without intervention, measuring document structure, traceability, and completeness. It treats gamification as an organizational intervention — not decoration — and subjects the hypothesis to the tests the field so often laments as missing.

By tying Gamification to quality applied to critical document production, the author delivers evidence scarce in Brazilian literature: gamification evaluated in a real institutional setting, with comparable metrics and discussion of the intervention’s limits.

The dissertation is linked to the paper Evaluation of the Change in the Quality of Reports with the Application of Gamification in a Corporative Institution, published in the proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. The paper presents the empirical evaluation of the gamified intervention in the corporate context studied.

The defense took place on March 23, 2023 in Brasília. The examining committee was chaired by the advisor, Prof. Dr. Sergio Antônio Andrade de Freitas (CIC/UnB), and composed of Prof. Dr. Charles Andryê Galvão Madeira (IMD/UFRN), Prof. Dr. George Marsicano Corrêa (UnB), and Prof. Dr. André Luiz Peron Martins Lanna (UnB). Prof. Dr. Gladston Luiz da Silva, PPCA program coordinator, also attended the session.
