Software for Good is calling — and there is a place for you

Six years, five fronts, 21 social initiatives supported and two applications registered at INPI. The CEDIS social-impact umbrella programme is opening its doors to faculty, students, professionals and institutions.

Some software generates profit. Some software generates dignity.

Software for Good was built for the second kind. Since 23 September 2020, when it was launched at the 20th University Week at UnB, the CEDIS umbrella programme has had one non-negotiable rule: the solution reaches the end user at no cost. Six years on, the programme is opening its doors — and there is room for your help.

What is already running

Not a promise. Working code.

DOARTI was born during the pandemic and today supports 21 social initiatives, connecting charitable organisations to donors in the Federal District. It is 100% volunteer-built.

AgroMart connects family farmers to the people who buy from them, in Community Supported Agriculture groups. It started at a hackathon and has grown with every undergraduate thesis since 2021, in the open.

LEPIC, with UFMG, measures children’s reading fluency so that literacy policy rests on evidence rather than guesswork. A3M brings active methodologies and learning indicators into the classroom. And Green SD takes care of the impact nobody sees: the energy the software itself consumes.

In 2026, two of the programme’s applications — Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Childhood Violence Prevention — received registration certificates from INPI.

Who we are looking for

Students who want their final thesis to be useful after it is handed in. Faculty from any field: the programme is about software, but it is built with social work, health, education and advertising. Professionals willing to give a few hours of their experience. And institutions with a real social need and no one to turn it into technology.

You do not need to arrive ready. You need to arrive.

What you take with you

A real project, a multidisciplinary team, a problem with consequences. Publications, hands-on practice, and the chance to see what you built end up in the hands of someone who needs it.

How to join

Write to Professor George Marsicano Corrêa , the programme coordinator:

georgemarsicano@unb.br

Tell him who you are and what you would like to do. If you would rather look first, the Software for Good page sets out the fronts, goals and projects in detail.

The programme is coordinated by George Marsicano, with Professors Ricardo Ajax Dias Kosloski and Sergio Antônio Andrade de Freitas among its researchers, at CEDIS/FCTE-UnB.
