Project Description

Git Ranking is a gamified tool to support Scrum, developed as a GitHub App for managing and motivating agile teams. The product was developed by Ana Beatriz Norberto da Silva and Beatriz Vieira Nascimento as a bachelor’s thesis under the supervision of Prof. Sergio Freitas , with academic support from the Center for Studies, Development, and Innovation in Software (CEDIS).

The solution integrates elements of the Octalysis framework to balance teams’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, consuming GitHub Webhooks processed by a Node.js backend and presented through a React/Next.js interface.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of the project are:

  • to help software development teams maintain continuous engagement and the visibility of individual progress within agile methodologies;
  • to provide a metrics dashboard and an achievements profile based on developers’ actual actions in the repositories;
  • to apply gamification techniques selected from the teams’ motivational profile, identified with support from the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) and the Octalysis Core Drives; and
  • to serve as an experimental basis for teaching, research, and outreach initiatives supported by CEDIS in gamification and software engineering.

Resources and Features

Among the features offered by Git Ranking are integrated login via GitHub, organization and repository selection, a Sprint tracking and progress panel (Overview), and a metrics dashboard with detailed visual feedback on the team’s technical progress.

The application also offers a developer profile with level, badges, and social feedback received, a team members list with interpersonal interactions, voting for “Sprint Hero,” peer-to-peer recognition, and visual feedback such as confetti effects when milestones are reached.
